For Toronto low-rise houses, semis and townhouses with individual furnaces; high-rise and shared-building heating are excluded. Air moving through a grille does not prove the furnace is producing heat.
Check the thermostat heating request and fan setting before assuming a component failure.
Compare the home's temperature trend with the timing of the airflow.
Persistent loss of heat needs assessment; gas or CO warning signs need immediate evacuation.

Furnace blowing cool air: heating or circulation?
Distinguish ordinary fan circulation from a house that is failing to heat, and prepare the right observations for a Toronto furnace enquiry.
Begin with the room temperature trend
Cool-feeling air is a description of comfort, not a measurement of furnace performance. A hand held near a grille cannot establish the equipment's temperature rise or whether it is operating within its specification. Start with what the household can document: the room temperature, requested temperature, operating mode and whether the home is becoming warmer over time.
Distinguish a house that reaches its setting but sometimes circulates cooler air from a house that never reaches the requested temperature. Also distinguish an issue at one grille from the same result throughout the home. These are different starting points for an assessment. Writing them down avoids an enquiry that says only the furnace is broken, while still leaving the diagnosis to the technician.
Read the fan and heating controls separately
Many thermostats offer separate fan and temperature controls. A continuous fan setting can move air when there is no active heating period. Check the wording in your thermostat instructions; circulation options and schedules vary. If continuous circulation was selected intentionally, the air need not feel warm at every moment for that setting to be doing what was requested.
Use the manufacturer's normal operating options rather than changing installation menus. Confirm the thermostat is in heating mode and look for its heat-request indicator. A displayed request is not confirmation that combustion occurred. If changing an ordinary fan setting alters the comfort complaint, note the result, but do not assume it rules out a separate problem when the house remains cold.
Notice when the cool airflow happens
Describe whether cooler air appears at the beginning of a cycle, after the room has warmed, or throughout the entire heating request. Some operating sequences include fan activity that does not coincide exactly with heat production. The equipment instructions explain its intended behaviour; a generic internet timing rule cannot establish whether yours is correct.
Keep observations simple and external. There is no need to open the cabinet, watch ignition components or insert a thermometer into the appliance. If the pattern is new, say when it began and whether heating was normal earlier that day. A technician can compare the sequence with the model's control logic and carry out the required measurements safely.
Compare rooms without changing the duct system
Check several usual rooms rather than judging the whole home from a distant register. Record which rooms are comfortable, which are cold and whether doors are normally open or closed. Look for furniture, rugs or belongings obstructing supply or return grilles. Move ordinary obstructions where safe, but do not start closing multiple grilles to force air toward another room.
If one level has always been less comfortable, explain that history separately from a sudden total loss of heat. A room-by-room pattern can point the investigation toward distribution, control location or the building itself. It does not automatically justify a new furnace. The assessment should distinguish inadequate heat production from heat not reaching, or not remaining in, particular spaces.
Keep maintenance and fault finding separate
An accessible filter can be checked using the furnace manual's homeowner procedure. A loaded or unsuitable filter is relevant information, but replacing it does not prove that all equipment protections and controls are functioning correctly. Use the specified size and permitted type; do not operate without a filter or make an improvised substitute to test a theory.
If a display is visible through an intended viewing window, record its exact message before anyone changes the equipment state. Avoid repeated power resets in an attempt to recover warm airflow. Do not touch gas controls, electrical connections or internal ignition parts. A cool-air symptom can arise from different causes, so a part list downloaded from a forum is not a repair plan.
Choose the right next step
If the home keeps cooling despite an ordinary heating request, arrange assessment and a safe warmth plan for the occupants. Gas smell, a carbon monoxide alarm, smoke or suspected poisoning requires emergency action: leave and call emergency services from a safe location. Do not wait for an ordinary enquiry response or stay inside to finish a checklist.
For a non-emergency Toronto home enquiry, send the postal code, home type, thermostat observations and which rooms are affected to 647-949-8848 by WhatsApp or text. Confirm who provides the visit, the assessment cost and that the furnace serves a qualifying individual low-rise home. High-rise and shared-building systems are outside this enquiry scope. Ask for an explanation of the finding before approving repairs. A message requests a conversation; availability and the appointment must be confirmed.
